Students will learn 5 common and useful edible and medicinal plants that they can safely harvest and use. They will learn recipes for foraged delicacies, as well as for herbal remedies that are useful to the whole family. Students will be encouraged to make nature journal entries about the plants we learn, and will be able to keep handouts that will help them find and identify these plants, long after the class has ended. *This class is best suited for learners living in North America, as the plants featured will be plants that are commonly found in that region. This class is purely informational and is not medical advice. None of the plants in this class should be treated as a substitute for approved medical care. I will mention stories of how people have used plants to help themselves, but it is for you and your family to research the benefits and risks of any medicinal plant before you decide to use it for such a purpose.
Learning Goals
This class will empower learners to use the plants in their neighborhood to feed and heal themselves and their families.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching outdoor education for over 13 years, and I find edible and medicinal plants to be one of the most fascinating topics to teach and learn about. At the forest-school that I co-founded in Seattle Washington, our students harvest and cook with wild edibles all year round, and we enjoy every bite! I have seen first-hand how learners can be empowered by the ability to make their own medicine, even if it is just for a scrape or a mosquito bite, and I hope to share that knowledge with as many students as possible.
