Students will learn about 8 different horses during this class and learn about the humans who are helping keep the wild horses wild and free. Each class we will discuss a horse and their history as well as see their beauty and feel their spirit through their legends. Class 1: Picasso- Wild Stallion of the Sand Wash Basin. We will discuss his story, see images of him and hear of his foals that still roam the ranges of Colorado today. Also, Spirit of Cimarron - Meet the stallion who the cartoon is based upon. We will learn about the real Spirit and see him in his habitat today. Class 2: Misty of Chincoteague (from the book from Marguerite Henry) and her foal Stormy. We'll learn about the real life Misty and find out how she touched the humans in her life as well as brief discussion of the book. Students need not have read the book in order to participate in this discussion. We will talk about all the information during class. We also learn information about the current wild horse herds of Assateague and Chincoteague and Pony Penning Days. We learn how they select horses for adoption/auction as well as how many horses will remain free. Class 3 Cloud - Wild Stallion of the Rockies. This horse has been featured in a documentary and has been depicted in Breyer horse models. We'll talk about his history, legacy and his foals, such as Encore, that still roam the wild of Montana and Wyoming. The instructor also interviewed someone from The Cloud Foundation, an organization that advocated for wild horses. This organization was started by Emmy Award winner Ginger Katherns. We share loads of information about this majestic stallion and how wild horse families share a special bond. Class 4: The Class will learn about the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and how they help the wild mustang population from overgrowing help them to stay healthy as well as keep them out of danger of starvation. We will discuss this organization and what they're doing and why. Learners will discover the programs as well as the methods the BLM uses and how becoming educated about these horses can help them in the future. Students will learn how they can help too. Class 5: Students will learn about training programs for mustangs including prison inmates who have helped train and teach wild horses so that they can in turn be adoptable horses. The instructor will share an interview and information from a genuine mustang horse trainer in Wyoming who shares his stories and details about training wild horses. Students will learn about some of the men and women who train the mustangs and work with inmates to better the lives of the horses as well as the inmates gain skills. The class will also hear a personal story of an adopted mustang from the Pryor Mountains named Lark who had an amazing flight like a pegasus horse. It's an incredible true story. Class 6: Students will have a time for conversation, opinions and discussions about mustangs and horses in general. The instructor will share her expertise of horses from her own herd of horses and show videos and information about her own horses. At the completion of the class, learners will have gained knowledge of wild horses and how people can educate themselves about programs and help future generations so that we do not loose the wild horses population entirely. This camp will be fun, learners will participate in discussions and will learn about famous horses and mustang stories as well as programs to help wild horses remain wild for future generations and how learners can help protect that future.
This instructor has had 40 + years of equine experience. Having owned, loved and ridden horses my entire life, I have a passion for horses that I love to share. This class is one of my many classes to come that I like to call "All Things Horses". The series of All Things Horses classes will include, geography (locations around the globe and how that location connects to horses, reading, writing short stories about horses, writing poetry about horses, horse personalities as well as horse anatomy. Please join me on this journey of horses. For purposes of the information on the BLM and mustang advocacy, this instructor has researched this topic extensively. Also, the BLM staff has provided permissions and/or information for this class. "There is nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse." - Winston Churchill
