Description
Class Experience
Students will be able to read and analyze a work of fiction for content and characterization.
I have been teaching since 2008 and am a certified English teacher. I love sharing classic and contemporary literature with students. I am offering this class as there has been a resurgence in the Wizard of Oz and it is exciting to share these stories from various perspectives. My approach helps to make literature come alive for my students through drama and the use of relevant music to the reading.
Each week students will receive a reading assignment between 10-30 pages and a related extension activity. Students will answer a reflection question in the classroom forum.
The teacher will provide power point slides and a Google doc/handout analyzing/comparing characters and important story points for stories discussed. Students will need to read selected passages outside of class and complete analysis to be discussed within class. Students will need to purchase/download a copy of “Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West” (Gregory Maquire) book to use for out of class work. The “Wizard Of Oz” (L.Frank Baum) is helpful but not necessary as excerpts will be provided by teacher. A knowledge of the Wizard Of Oz and its characters is helpful for this class, but not a requirement for success.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learner progress will be assessed through discussion and completion of assignments.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This class is suitable for all ages listed.
