In this one-time seasonal course we will cover the changes that occur in the landscape when plants prepare themselves for winter. We will cover the topics of seasonality and how plants achieve dormancy to survive frost until the next spring. We will discuss the environmental trigger that begins the seasonal change, and the processes envolved that reveal the striking fall colors many love and enjoy. The compounds in plants that possess the color qualities we see in the fall will be also discussed. Course materials and information will be delivered in a presentation screen shared through Canva and Zoom. Students will not need to access anything other than Outschool and Zoom during course time. Elementary plant science and basic understanding of changing of seasons is needed for this course.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of the fall season. They will learn terms like anthocyanin, carotenoid, chlorophyll, deciduous, dormancy, and senescence as it pertains to plant science and the change of seasons in autumn from summer to winter.
