Having trouble sleeping at night? Are you scared of the dark? In this one-time class, students will learn about how their emotions and fears impact them, and practice techniques designed to bring a feeling of peace and tranquility to their bedtimes. This class is perfect for those who are ready to learn the basics of guided relaxation in a fun, interactive way. No prior knowledge is needed, just a desire to relax! Students will first discuss the definition and purpose of fear with guidance from the teacher. Sensitive topics will be avoided-only general definitions will be discussed. We will also discuss the difference between "actual" and "pretend" fears in relation to fear of the dark. They will then learn and practice a deep breathing technique called "Buddy Breathing" that will help them to relax at bedtime. We will do this activity with our favorite stuffed animals as helpers! Next, students will participate in a guided relaxation activity with their stuffed animal that is designed to reduce their fear of the dark. Finally, students will have the opportunity to provide the teacher feedback and ask any questions about the relaxation exercise. *Please note that this class is not intended to provide therapy.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the fundamentals of guided relaxation with simple, fun breathing exercises in a calm, peaceful environment. They will be taught how to apply these techniques to relaxation at bedtime.
