Description
Class Experience
History's biggest question is "Who were they?" - who were the movers, shakers, and groundbreakers of the world? In this course, we'll ask that question about the often-forgotten or unknown women who changed the world through their contribution to the arts, sciences, politics, literature, and academics. Each class session will combine lecture and discussion to create an engaging and interactive learning experience. Lectures will focus on each woman's experiences through childhood and...
Students will learn about the lives of historical women while utilizing skills related to productive discussions - respectful and active listening, fact-backed claims, and clear and concise ideas.
Learners will not need any supplies for class but may bring note-taking material at their own discretion.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Many of the women we will cover have experienced some form of discrimination in their history. For some, the racism or sexism they were subjected to shaped who they are or the experienced they underwent. The impact of discrimination will be discussed in relation to history in an age-appropriate manner. Some women made their mark on history due to their contribution in or experience of violent events. Such events include World War I and II and political revolutions. Discussions of these turbulent events will be handled in an age-appropriate manner, but some students may find these events difficult to handle. There will be no violent or sensitive imagery shown.
Materials for this course will come from sources such as The Representation Project, Smithsonian Magazine, and the National Women's History Museum.
