Frida Kahlo is arguably the most influential female artist in history. How important it is for budding artists to learn about Kahlo and her work! In this class, students will learn about the fearless life of Frida Kahlo, and how her self-confidence can set an example for us today. Instead of softening her bold features (such as her unibrow and facial hair) in her art, she accentuated them. We live in an era of filters, concealers, and fillers. What if, like Kahlo, we found beauty in the very things that others consider our flaws? We will watch a short video about Kahlo and her art. Then, we will have an open discussion about a few of her most famous paintings, where students will be able to express their own ideas about her work. Students will then take inspiration from Kahlo's biographical art to create a self-portrait that includes elements of their own life. This visual, interactive class is perfect for all learners, including those who are neurodivergent or struggle to stay engaged with traditional "book learning." I hope that through this class, students will be inspired to reflect on their own identity and create art that is truly unique.

Teacher expertise and credentials
California Teaching Certificate in English to Speakers of Other Languages
I am a professional artist, specializing in oil portrait paintings, and I have had the privilege of displaying my artwork in venues across the country. I believe that art is about self expression and learning, and I hope to create a fun, interactive environment where students can develop a love for art while building their confidence in a new skill.
I have always struggled with expecting “perfection” of myself, especially in my art, so I am constantly reminding my students, as well as myself, that perfection is not required, and that practice, not unreasonable expectations, is what a advances our skills.
My joy in teaching comes from the comments of my students and their parents, expressing that they created something they didn’t know was possible.
