In this 55- minute class, we will learn about Elizabeth "Eliza" Schuyler Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton's wife. Elizabeth Hamilton Schuyler was only 47 years when Hamilton died, and she lived another 50 years. After Alexander Hamilton's death, she spent the rest of her life raising money for charities and preserving Hamilton's legacy. In brief, the class will discuss her childhood, family, upbringing in upstate New York, marriage to Alexander Hamilton, and her life after Alexander Hamilton's death. We will use the book "The Schuyler Sisters" by Monika Davies. The book is appropriate for 8 to 10 years old students. Although Eliza had 14 siblings, we will discuss her sisters Angelica Schuyler Church and Margarita "Peggy" Schuyler Van Rensselaer. We will talk about her marriage to Alexander Hamilton. She was not only a mother to their eight children, but she helped him with writing, such as the Federalist Papers and George Washington's farewell address. We will discuss how his death impacted her life. With Hamilton's death, she was left impoverished, and a few months later, she witnessed her father's death. She was able, with determination and ingenuity kept her family afloat. Eliza argued before Congress for her husband's war pension, and she raised private funds to keep her family in their house. She also dedicated herself to charity. Mrs. Hamilton, with a friend, founded New York's first private orphanage and raised money for a free school in northern Manhattan. Eliza Hamilton worked for nearly 50 years of the autobiography of her husband. She died a few months after it was published. This biography inspired and was a source for Ron Chernow's "Hamilton" and Lin-Manuel Miranda musical "Hamilton: An American Musical. "

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have tutored social studies, history, and math to students from elementary to high school for the last five years. I have undergraduate and graduate hours in history studies. And I have completed continuing education credits in incorporating history in economic courses for primary and secondary education. There are very few books that provide an accurate biographical portrayal of Elizabeth Hamilton. For this class, I am referencing Ron Chernow, Hamilton (2004) and Monika Davis, The Schuyler Sisters (2017), and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical Hamilton: An American Musical (2015). Plus, history is a hobby for me.
