This is a 20-week ongoing book club all about sports using the "Who is" book series. We will be reading the Who is... series about a number of athletes and sporting events in history. Students will read the book on their own the week before class and come ready to discuss. We will be reading the following books: Week of July 5th - Who Is Michael Jordan?: Let's learn about one of the most iconic NBA basketball players of all time. We will learn about his rise to the professional leagues. We will talk about what he accomplished not only for his career but for the sport of basketball. Week of July 11th - Who Was Babe Ruth?: "Take me out to the ball game!" We will be heading to the baseball field to learn about the legend Babe Ruth. He was from Baltimore and as a child, he was a handful. He was sent to a reform school where he discovered his talent for baseball. At the age of nineteen, he was on his way to becoming a sports legend. Week July 18th - What Are the Summer Olympics?: In 775 BC athletes from all over Ancient Greece came to compete in various games. These games were held every four years. Over time they faded, but in 1896 they were brought back. Today, athletes from all over the country gather to compete against each other in various sports and events for the chance at a gold medal. Week of July 25th - Who Are Venus and Serena Williams?": Two sisters who began playing tennis at a very early. We will follow them as they become two of the most successful female athletes of all time. Each of them earned a record four gold medals each in the Summer Olympics. Week of August 1st - Who Was Kobe Bryant? and Who Is Chloe Kim? (These are smaller books. So, we will read and discuss both): Kobe Bryant was a legendary NBA player. He not only left his legacy on the sport of basketball but also on the world. We will follow his journey before his death. Chole Kim is a dedicated athlete who not only excelled in academics but also in sports. She became the youngest woman to earn a gold medal in the Olympics as a snowboarder. All of her success as an athlete while attending Princeton University. Week of August 8th - Who Was Muhammad Ali?: Muhammad Ali once known as Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. became the first and only three-time (in succession) World Heavyweight Champion. We will follow his story which led to his nickname "The Greatest" in the sport of boxing. Week of August 15th - What Is the World Cup?: Every four years, thirty-two of the best men's soccer teams from around the world come together to compete for the title of FIFA World Cup winner. We will take a detailed look at the history and what it has become today. Week of August 22nd - Who Is Tom Brady? and Who Is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? (These are smaller books. So, we will read and discuss both): Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. We will discuss his success on the football field and his 264-game-winning career. We all know him as "The Rock" and we will be discussing his life story so far. We will talk about his days as a football player to becoming a WWE Superstar. Week of August 29th - Who Is Wayne Gretzky?: Week of September 5th- Who Was Jesse Owens? Week of September 12th - What Are the Paralympic Games? Week of September 19th - Who Was Jackie Robinson? Week of December 12th - Who Is Pele? Week of December 19th - Who Was Seabiscuit? These books can be purchased from most bookstores, online, or rented from libraries, and Target has a huge collection that can be purchased from their app. Each student will be able to talk and discuss each class. We will have some questions that they will be required to answer in class, we will have an open discussion, and also some fun games to test their knowledge of what they have read.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about their favorite sports icons current and past. They will also learn how to discuss with the teacher and fellow classmates in an open discussion format. We will learn how to give facts and opinions with support from our readings.

Hello! My name is Teacher Tabitha. It's so nice to meet you. I am very excited to teach your child. I teach classes that include English, History, Science, Math, Sport, and Cooking. I believe that by bringing multiple and even all subjects into the classroom we can better relate what we learn to the real world. I have been cooking for over 20 years. I have over 5 years teaching in traditional and non-traditional classrooms. I have a Bachelors Degree in education from Miami University of Ohio. I am passionate about my students and their learning. I promote proper pronunciation, reading skills, creative thinking, and conversational skills. When I am not teaching I love to cook and spend time with my family.
