Description

Class Experience

In this one-time workshop, students will familiarize themselves with terms and concepts, like: 
- Who is the plaintiff?  The defendant?  The Judge?
- What’s the difference between the trial court, the appellate courts, and the United States Supreme Court? 
- When do cases reach the Supreme Court?  
- Why do we have a Supreme Court, and what’s a tripartite system of government? 
- What’s the difference between state and federal court?
- What's a “dissenting opinion”? 

The first thirty minutes of class will be "background," learning the above topics through interactive discussion and presentation.  Next, the class will spend thirty minutes "spotting" the key players with the instructor.  This includes reviewing excerpts of cases and identifying the plaintiff, defendant, judge, date, dissent, and court.  Our last thirty minutes will be spent applying the material. 
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
It's important to note that, in every lawsuit, a plaintiff has been "wronged."  This might mean that some cases we discuss in class involve scenarios where the plaintiff was hurt, killed, or racially or sexually discriminated against.  This will not be the focus of the class and the instructor will not discuss the details or specifics of a particular defendant's conduct.  At most, students will discuss the "facts" of the case in a summary fashion.
