US Grade 3 - 6
This is an introduction to who Native American peoples are both past and present. The class will cover information not often covered in textbooks. We will examine what most people think of when they think of Native Americans and work to change those perceptions. I will present information about stereotypes and why they're harmful, a brief history of North American Native nations, and then mostly focus on modern Native American peoples - who we are, what we do, where we live, powwows, art, music, etc. I will be teaching with a Power Point presentation and a few short videos. This class is taught by a real Native person, so it is taught from an Indigenous perspective. I will speak my language a little and show some modern cultural items. No prior knowledge is needed for this class. This is a lecture style class. There is time for some Q&A and a short game, but it is not a social class. (There is a class for ages 6 to 9 that is the same content, but broken down into two shorter sessions if your student may have trouble sitting through a 75 minute class.)
