Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
White Rabbit's pocket watch is missing! Can you solve the puzzles and search the kingdom to find it?

In this one-time class for children ages 6-8, students will reinforce their ability to tell time to the five-minute mark through a song, riddles, and puzzles.

First, we will chant a song counting by fives as we watch a video. While we chant, March Hare will leave out one number. Can you guess the number so we can search around his house for the missing watch? Next, Mad Hatter will ask a riddle. If we solve it, we can search around at his tea party. Then, we will meet the queen who is angry at Alice for knocking the clocks off the castle walls. After we arrange the clocks through our interactive Slides game, she will allow us to search the castle. Later, we will help Alice get through a maze by following the path of clocks according to the times listed. Finally, Cheshire Cat will give us a riddle and we will draw arrows on two clocks using the numbers we have figured out. Each time we complete a task, we will search the area in Wonderland to try to locate the missing pocket watch.
During this class, students will have the opportunity to read the time on many different analog clocks. Some of this will be done as a group and some individually while playing an interactive game. At the end of the lesson, students will have more confidence in their ability to tell time. I will gently guide the students as needed throughout the lesson and offer them lots of praise and encouragement as we have fun and work together to find the missing pocket watch.

My two beliefs about learning:
1. I believe that learning should be fun!
I love using games and escape room-style puzzles in my lessons to actively involve students. Escape room puzzles are engaging and involve a different kind of thinking, thus creating a unique mindset for the lesson, and allowing the students to forget that they are learning.
2. I believe that if a student genuinely tries, but fails to master a concept, the teacher is at fault.
The teacher's job is to analyze the gaps in a student's learning and determine how each student learns best. If I am not teaching in a way that my students understand, then I have failed as a teacher.

I have been a personal tutor for over 30 years and have been teaching online for five years. I have a Bachelor's degree in elementary education from Arizona State University, and besides tutoring, I have taught in a variety of settings: preschool and elementary classrooms, private flute lessons, homeschooling, Cub Scout Den Leader, teen camp counselor, teen youth group leader, and many church classes and activities. I have taught subjects such as phonics, reading, writing, math, history, science, Latin, music, first aid, cooking, map reading, fire building, pocketknife safety, and art appreciation.

A fun fact about me is that I love to create escape rooms in my home for family and friends. Before the pandemic, my husband and I were actively pursuing our dream to open an escape room business. That dream has been put on hold for now, but we still love to create and host games for our close friends and family.

I am excited to be teaching on Outschool and look forward to meeting your learner in my classes!
