Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
During our engaging classes, we will learn about couplet poems and write some creative lines about animals and other cool creatures. A couplet poem usually has 2 lines that rhyme. For example, "cow" and "meow" could be used. Additionally, each line has about the same number of syllables. Students will be given examples and support throughout the writing process. Notably, we will discuss animals, magical things, rhyming, syllables, nouns, and adjectives. In each class, I'll ask everyone to share their poetry or at least some of their wonderful writing. Some people also like to draw, and that's awesome. Learners often inspire me and each other with their fresh, funny, and interesting ideas. My friendly personality helps facilitate learning and conversations.

Here is the schedule. However, learners can choose their own theme each week.

Week of July 24th = Nocturnal Animals
Week of July 31st = Animals and Camping
Week of August = Animals and Summer
Week of August = Animals and Magic

I often ask learners for topic suggestions. Fundamentally, I'm flexible, and I encourage learners to write about things that they like. They never have to focus on the theme of the week. :]

Parental Guidance
This is a fun poetry class with a secular and creative focus. Magical things will be discussed (e.g., a wizard baking a cake for a talking lizard). Learners do not have to write about anything they do not like or believe in.
Supply List
I use Microsoft Word and/or Canva to create the lesson material, but learners don't need to print anything out. I will share my screen during the meeting. Learners will need paper, pencils, and an eraser. Some learners prefer to type up their writing, and that's fine. I often type up learners' ideas while sharing my screen to help with spelling. Additionally, I'm happy to send work to learners and their family members (via Outschool messaging). Some students like to add color or art to their work, so they may want to bring things like crayons or markers. Lastly, learners can show us things like their pets, stuffed animals, and toys.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Kendall. I've been teaching on Outschool since July 2021, and I've joyfully worked with children for over 10 years. Essentially, I enjoy personalizing educational experiences and facilitating learning in fun ways. I'm an encouraging educator, and I value authenticity, creativity, and diversity. On Outschool, I mainly teach poetry and writing classes. I taught English online to children in other countries for 2 years, and I'm excited to connect with more learners from around the world. I'm TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certified. I've also worked as an English tutor, after-school science instructor, engaging camp counselor, and assistant camp supervisor. Additionally, I've really enjoyed working with children who are autistic, and I have some personal and professional experience with neurodiversity. Notably, I'm grateful for all of the bright and beautiful brains that help make Outschool so cool! :-]

As a lifelong learner, I appreciate how others and education can shape our evolution. I graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a BA in Anthropology, and I have an AA in Psychology from a community college. I decided that I want to become a veterinarian later in life, so I've been working on prerequisites that I need for vet school. I love the flexibility and outstanding opportunities that Outschool offers. So, cheers to learning and loving an array of things! Thank you, and I look forward to connecting with you.
