When Is It Okay to Lie? Debating Ethical Dilemmas
Carolie Sly
In this 2-week course, we will talk about social and ethical dilemmas that have no right or wrong answer.
Class experience
Students will be encouraged to talk and listen to each other as they discuss social and ethical dilemmas. We will loosely follow the Socratic Method, in which the teacher poses a dilemma and then serves as a facilitator to deepen students' thinking. Students will voice their viewpoints, consider other students' positions, and refine their positions accordingly. Each class will begin with a question, such as: When is okay to lie? When is it justified to steal? What limits should there be on...
Students will demonstrate an appreciation for listening to others when discussing a dilemma that has ethical and social implications. • Students will practice disagreeing with respect, courtesy, and an open mind. • Students will integrate opinions and ideas of other students as their thinking evolves. • Students will construct their positions with contextual evidence (from reading, previous experiences, discussion with family and friends, etc.) • Students will identify potential unintended consequences of their positions.
I love listening to students' reasoning about difficult subjects and have lead Socratic discussions with high school students, including refugees living in a camp in Greece, and at a public cafe with participants of all ages.
None
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will discuss some topics that evoke strong opinions. However, the class will emphasize no right or wrong answer in an effort to encourage students to consider multiple perspectives.
Carolie Sly
I love to facilitate students' thinking about thought-provoking ethical and social situations. After posing a topic, I encourage them to talk and listen to each other, change their minds, find humor in serious debates, and disagree with respect....
