In this 90 min class, students will learn how to hem garments such as skirts or pants that are too long, how to mend holes along seams, and how to mend some rips in cushions and other fabric household items.

Class Experience

  • Students will expand and refine their basic sewing skills as they learn the practical applications of sewing by mending ripped clothing and items and hemming too-long clothing.
I have been sewing since I was about 5 years old. I am 28 now and I make some of my own clothes and all of my own costumes. Sewing is a skill I use daily and I love to pass on this skill to others who want to learn it
Students will need;
a pack of assorted needles - $1.99
thread (preferably in a similar color to the clothing you will mend) - $1.99
fabric pins - $1.99
4-6 in embroidery hoop - 10- 15 cm (wood is preferable, but plastic is fine) - $1.75
fabric - 2-3 1ft squares - $0-$9
--- any type is fine, but cotton broad cloth or muslin will work best (both can be found in packs of scrap fabric at most craft stores), old cotton sheets will also work well
mini or small binder clips - $1.59 - $7.79
seam ripper tool - $1.99
thimble - please opt for a silicone or leather one as they are much easier to use - $2.99-$4.99
pack of 2 or 4 hole buttons - $1.99
ripped clothing - along the seem please - (it is possible and sometimes preferable to get clothes from Goodwill or another thrift store for purposes of practice)
a throw pillow that you don't mind also ripping
too long skirts and pants for hemming (again, it is possible and sometimes preferable to get these things from Goodwill or other thrift stores)

small scissors
large scissors

note; as far as the needles, thread, and pins are concerned, most mini sewing kits have pretty much everything needed for this class (tools wise) - $1.99 - $11.99
This class will involve sharp tools such as needles, pins, and scissors. While injury is highly unlikely, it is possible. Having an adult in the house would be preferred.
Please note: Supervising adults must stay off camera for the duration of the class.
