Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Kids around the world are curious about Mardi Gras and Carnival, which they may have heard about in movies or in real life!  What exactly is Mardi Gras and how is it celebrated around the world?  For the first half of class. Students will learn history and vocabulary through an engaging google slide presentation about topics such as:
What is a Kings Cake?  How does it look in France and Lousiana?  What happens if you find the hidden treasure inside?  
Krewes- How are parades in New Orleans organized?  
Carnival-  What countries around the world call the holiday by this name? Locate the countries on a map and discuss how their traditions might differ.  
Masks & Costumes-  Looking at a mask, can you guess which country it is from?  Do places like Venice and Rio have different types of costumes?  What type of costumes to children in France and Belgium wear to celebrate Carnival? 
Cajun-What does this word mean and how did French speakers come to live in that part of the US?  

For the second half of class, students will enjoy a friendly competition of a Kahoot game in order to test their knowledge!  

*Note- we will briefly discuss form a historical and cultural perspective that Mardi Gras is the Tuesday before the start of lent, a Catholic tradition. We will also note that cultures around the world continue to take part in Carnival and Mardi Gras in a non-religious way.
