Researching family history is one of the most common hobbies today. In this one-time class, learners will identify the five main reasons behind the historic use of family names and research the meaning behind their own last name. Learners will explore major historical events that led to the common use of surnames for identification. Learners will hear examples of modern surnames with ancient and medieval beginnings. Learners will then predict which of the five categories their family might have been and research the meaning of their own last name.
