In this 1-time class we'll leave the insect world to their outside fun while we turn rocks into non-biting, non-bugging insects. Learners will leave with a painted rock insect, some information about insects, and maybe a new friend!

Class experience

With a Master's in Education, a B.S. in Special Education, having taught art & craft classes for children in our community, and multiple subjects in the school system for 20+ years,... oh, and having painted several rocks in my life, I should have enough expertise to lead this one time rock insect painting class! It is more of a fun class for students to be creative, rather than a class where students learn how to paint specific insects or use advanced art techniques. Preparing the slides was lots of fun - I think learners will enjoy learning and sharing about insects in this multi-disciplinary (part art, part nature/science) class.
Learners will need the following:
1. 1 or more flat rocks to paint, preferably round, oval, or triangle-shaped. I use small flat rocks, so I can glue magnets on back, but this is optional. Younger learners may prefer painting on larger rocks. Rocks should be washed and dried before class.

2. Crafter's acrylic paints in 4 or more colors.

3. Paintbrush(es)- preferably one very fine for painting detail, and another larger for painting the whole rock.

4. Toothpicks for extra fine detail. (optional if they have a fine tip paintbrush, but they really can be useful)

5. Surface for painting on. A plastic plate just large enough for learner to access all sides of rock easily would allow then to move rock safely if needed for drying. Otherwise, a piece of wax paper, a washable placemat, or other surface that will release a wet rock should a student accidentally turn over their rock before it's completely dry should work.

6. Container of water for rinsing paint brushes. Wide and shallow is more stable than tall and deep. Place this lower than any technology and out of the way of accidental bumps.

7. Blow dryer plugged in where learners can speed the drying of their insects. As alternatives, they can bring a paper fan; paper to fold a fan; or they can come to class with 1 rock already painted a solid color and a 2nd rock not painted. This way they won't be bored while others put their first coat on, and they are certain to have a dry rock for adding detail.

8. Optional- Wet Wipes or damp cloth for wiping stray paint.

9. Something to squeeze paint out onto (palette).... I use lids from plastic or styrofoam containers that would otherwise be tossed. A small plastic plate works well, also.
There is the potential for paint to get on learners and surfaces besides rocks, and for water to be spilled. Having a wet cloth to wipe up stray paint, and positioning rinse water below technology and off to the side so it won't be inadvertently knocked or harm technology will help. Also putting rinse water in a wide, but low container will provide better stability. Use of a blow dryer will speed drying time. If learner is using this, please ensure a safe set-up.
