Class Experience

Learners will follow a simple, gluten free, no bake recipe to make delicious "freezer fudge" to cool learners and their family and friends down during those hot summer days!

I will teach by walking my students through each step of the recipe process, ensuring that everyone is on the same step together as we progress through the recipe. While cooking, we will talk about the fact that these treats are gluten free so those with gluten sensitivities can enjoy. I will demonstrate that learners can make easy treats quickly using simple every day kitchen tools that almost everyone already has including: measuring spoons and cups, mixing spoon, mixer, microwave, and freezer. Learners will learn the importance of planning ahead to reading and following a recipe.

The class will be structured as follows:
- Welcome and Introductions! Wash hands and review ingredients and supply list with all learners. (I will check in to be sure that all learners have everything needed before we begin!) (5-6 min.)
- Discuss why learners chose this class together as a group. Was it because the learner is eating gluten free? Was it because the treat sounds tasty? What flavors and colors did they chose for their treats? ( 4-5 min.)
- Measuring out and combining ingredients (10-12 min.)
- Popping the treat into the freezer! Remind them to not try the treat for at least 5 hours. (1 min.)
 - Reminder to clean up the kitchen: encourage learners to wash and dry dishes! (2 min.)
- Goodbyes! (2-3 min.)

I love cooking and teaching learners by asking lots of questions about their flavor/decorating choices as we are cooking together in the class. Young learners will experience "cooking" a simple recipe (using their very own choices for flavors and decorations) that taste good and can be shared with the whole family - instilling a sense of pride and confidence in the learner! I love to encourage my learners in making those choices and root them on for making them independently and boldly! I will remind learners the importance of cleaning up after themselves and strongly encourage them to do it right after they are done cooking!

At the end of the class we will review the following questions together:
* Did you enjoy making the treats?
* Who will you share your treats with?
* If you make these treats again, what will you do differently next time? Will you use the same flavors? Will you use more or less decorations?
* When would be a good time to make these treats again and why? (For example: I recently had all the ingredients and decorations in my home for freezer fudge when my daughter's friends came over for a birthday party sleep over! They made all different flavors of the fudge and then decorated each differently and shared amongst themselves. Every child took some of each kind home to share with their families!)

*Hooray! - No previous cooking experience needed!*

Learning Goals

Learners will learn how to follow a simple, 5 ingredient recipe while using simple kitchen tools to make a quick and easy cool treat to share with friends and family. They will feel confident in their cooking skills and pride in what they have created! They will independently make the choices for flavors to be used. They will use critical thinking skills to develop ideas for how to change the recipe using different flavors or decorations depending on the occasion. They will learn the importance of preparing ahead of time to create a recipe and the importance of cleaning up after themselves.

Kids have been a part of my life since I was one! From babysitting, camp counseling and working in Early Childhood Educational facilities to teaching all subjects to elementary school children in public/private schools and hospitals, to co-owning and directing my own preschool, I have worked in a variety of settings educating, supporting and learning right along with them! Here on Outschool, I teach all things geared towards pre school and elementary school aged learners including Literacy, Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Creative Arts, Social and Emotional Development and Cooking! My degrees include a B.A. in Psychology from Western Michigan University, and a M.A. degree in Child Development from Michigan State University. I am licensed to teach Preschool - 6th grade and hold a Director of Large Center Child Care Certification in the state of Colorado in the U.S.A. - where I am lucky enough to call home! My zeal for teaching, and making lives the best they can be for children has always been what has driven me and encouraged me in all of my jobs...even when I dressed up as the costumed character mascots at Chuck E. Cheese when I was a teenager! (One of my earliest jobs!) I am married with two awesome kids who have spent many hours engaging and assisting in many areas in my many classrooms over the years!

My Policies for Learners on Outschool are as follows:

1) Classes will begin at the scheduled time, even if all learners are not in the classroom (unless there is a technical issue which does happen from time to time). I will not contact absent learners during class time so I can focus on the learners who are present. If no one is in the classroom 10 minutes after the class start time, I will leave the classroom. The class session will be cancelled for that day, and a recording of the class will be posted on the classroom page for the learner to watch when they are able which will be considered the make up class.
2. Classes will always be made up if there is a problem and I cannot attend class.
3. Refunds follow the ‘Limited’ model. Parents may withdraw up to a week before class starts with a full refund. Within this timeframe, parents may transfer to a new section up to 48 hours before start time, but are no longer entitled to a refund.
4. Many of my classes require a minimum enrollment for engaging with other students in learning. For this reason, if there are not enough learners within 24 hours of class, I will contact families with options to either transfer to a more populated section of the same class or to receive a full refund. For classes that require at least 3 enrollments, I am happy to teach to learners on a 1 to 1 basis, under the premise that class will be taught in a 25 minute class due to less time for engagement with other learners. I will also happily teach class to 2 learners under the premise that class will be taught in 35 minutes for the same reason. (Sometimes this happens if there are unplanned absences in a class as well bringing the class to 1 or 2 learners which means that this policy will still stand).
