What Will the Future Hold? You Decide!

Science fiction writers have been predicting what the future might hold for as long as the genre has existed. Sometimes those predictions have been incredibly accurate. Other times they've been spectacularly wrong, but still a lot of fun. In this class, students will use an essay written in 1964 by esteemed sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov as a jumping off point to talk about sci-fi's predictive nature. Asimov wrote the essay to celebrate the 1964 World's Fair. I will share images from that World's Fair to give students an idea of what people then thought our future would look like. Students will then make some predictions of their own about what the future might hold for things like transportation, education, medicine and the environment. Expect a lot of discussion, sharing and, certainly, some wild, fun ideas about what our future might hold.
Learning Goals
Students will have a stronger sense of how to discern a writer's purpose and what factors might have influenced the writer's perspective.
