In this one-time class, students will complete a series of brainstorming exercises to help them recognize what makes them unique. These exercises involve listing and descriptive writing to help students write a more effective personal statement or college application essay.

After introductions, the teacher will lead students through a series of brainstorming exercises. Students will be provided with a digital copy of these exercises that they can complete during the class; however, these brainstorming exercises can also be completed a separate sheet of paper if desired.

In order to make the class more interactive and to allow students to receive feedback on their ideas, students will be encouraged to share their work at various points in the lesson. Students will be able to enter their responses in the chat or unmute themselves to share with the class. Due to the personal nature of these exercises, sharing is encouraged but not required. Students will also be able to participate by offering feedback to each other.

Please note that students will not be writing the essay during class. The class is designed to help student generate ideas and have a sense of direction as they approach the application essay writing process.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
These exercises involve broad categories such as values, important experiences, important people, etc. Students will not be asked to disclose anything that they do not wish to. Anything students choose to share with the class with be of their own accord. The teacher will remind students that their peers in the class may hold different values or may have had different experiences than their own. Should a situation arise where a student "overshares" information, the teacher will redirect the conversation out of respect for all parties involved. My goal is a create a safe place for all learners to brainstorm what makes them unique and what they might want to emphasize in a college essay.
Supply List
Students will be provided with a link to a Google Slides presentation that will allow them to complete the activities. Students may also write their responses on a separate sheet of paper.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
