From Rembrandt’s The Night Watch to Picasso’s Guernica, Raphael’s School of Athens to Manet’s Bar at the Follies Bergere, there is a remarkable consensus about which works of art are considered to be true Masterworks of European art. But what is it exactly about each work that makes it not just memorable but sublime? Does each generation consider the same works as Masterworks? Are we all looking at works the same way? What is that seemingly indefinable thing that draws in the viewer that makes a work linger in mind and heart? In this specially created class geared to 8-12 year olds we will expand our critical thinking about acknowledged Masterworks of European art. We will consider all of these questions and give learners the skills and confidence to appreciate all art going forward. All images of art will be displayed for interactive learner discussion. No experience necessary, just be willing to look and to think!
