Class Experience

We will be learning about the Periodic Table of Elements and how it organizes information about the elements. What is your favorite element or atom? Maybe it is oxygen or sodium or maybe it is gold?

Students will become familiar with how to use the periodic table to quickly find information which is an essential skill in chemistry.
We will be making a model of several different atoms. Look at the inside parts of an atom, then use the first step in the scientific process of observation to find different names of atoms on the Periodic Table of Elements.

Our time together will be interactive for participants. Students will have time to ask questions and share their thoughts.

Students do not need to have any background knowledge about Chemistry before taking this class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Ms. Karen, I love working with children. I am originally from the central coast of California, but during the past several years I have lived in the Southwest regions of the United States and now I currently live in Arizona.

I am a certified Montessori teacher and I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from California State University in Chico, CA, and a teaching credential from the state of California. I have taught students in preschool, kindergarten, elementary, and middle school grades. My desire is to encourage my students to develop a lifelong love of learning. I enjoy bringing creativity to whatever I am teaching and drawing out the creative side of children as they make new discoveries.

One of my passions is teaching science because I enjoy learning new things and digging deeper into "the why" behind the information. Science is happening all around us. I have worked with Gravitas Publications as an Online Instructor from 2010 - 2015 teaching Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Astronomy, and Geology to younger students.

I believe it is important for both teachers and parents to work together to create the best learning environment for students. I am a firm believer in encouraging children to make their own discoveries in science. I teach using the Real Science-4-Kids curriculum because it is an easy-to-understand yet scientifically sound approach to learning the higher-level subject matter of different branches of science for example Chemistry, Biology, and Physics

I look forward to working with your child in one of my classes.
