Class Experience

Hello! Thank you for your interest in this class. I have a degree in Microbiology and am so excited to offer a course about my passion! During this class your learner will be introduced to the basics of how a microscope works. We will discuss how it can magnify images so that we can see what is not visible to the naked eye. Students will learn what magnification is and how it is measured in multiples. For example 2x, 4x, 10x. Students will learn what these magnifications mean (10x is ten times larger than the original object). We will then use visual aids to observe different objects under the microscope.

We will then begin exploring different bacteria and viruses under the microscope. I will share pictures of the different specimens and students will get a chance to guess what they are looking at. I will then reveal what the image is and we will discuss the bacteria or virus. We will talk about whether it is a pathogen or harmful/helpful.

The course is designed to be fun and interactive. The beginning of the course will be lecture style as they learn about how microscopes work. They will be permitted and encouraged to ask questions for discussion and clarification. The second half of the course will be more interactive. We will be looking at and discussing images of slides and student will have fun trying to guess what they see. This is often very funny but also informative.

I would like students to have their cameras on as we will be interacting. No prior knowledge is needed.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Teacher Emily or Ms. E. Thank you for visiting my profile. I have a very diverse teaching and educational background that allows me to bring expertise, experience, and excitement to each class. It also allows me to teach a wide variety of subjects with an emphasis on science. I have experience working with students from ages 4-17.

I have Bachelor’s degrees in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Microbiology from the University of Georgia. I then became a certified teacher in broad field science for grades 6-12.

I spent five years as a public school classroom science teacher for grades 7-8. I also tutored Physics, Chemistry, Math, and Biology to high school students. For two years, I taught kindergarten at a private school. While teaching kindergarten, I was responsible for creating my own curriculum just like with Outschool. Most recently, I have taught ESL to students online for three years with VIPKid. I have taught almost 4,000 online classes! During my online ESL classes, I often utilize step by step drawings and games for rewards. Therefore, I am very experienced in those areas as well. My experience with classroom and online teaching is an asset to teaching successful and engaging classes through Outschool. I also love to build the confidence of learners which I have mastered during my time teaching students a second language. Teaching is my passion because it gives me the opportunity to see students learn and grow.

My other passion is for all things science! I particularly enjoy life sciences and chemistry. I am fascinated by the world around us especially what we cannot see. I’d love to help convey that excitement and wonder to your child. My classes are interactive and designed to pique students interest in the science while mastering the material. I also love drawing, riddles, games, and discussions which I use often in my current online classes. I will be using those skills to bring exciting and engaging classes to your learner!

I have three children and my favorite thing to do is spend time with them. We enjoy traveling, exploring the outdoors, and trying new and interesting food. I also love to read! That is another passion that I like to share with students.

If you have any class requests or subjects that you would like to see added to my classes, please let me know. I am happy to accommodate if possible.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my profile. I hope to see you child in class very soon!
