In this 4 week course, students will learn what caused the Korean War, the war itself, and the outcomes of the War. In week 1, students will learn the causes of the Korean War. We will discuss post World War 2 outcomes, Containment, the threat of Communism and the ideological differences between the Communist USSR and China and the Capitalist Western Europe and United States. In week 2, we will discuss the war itself and decisive battles as well as the state mate with the peace talks, why everyone kept fighting and what turned the tide of the War towards an armistice that to today has not declared an end to the war. We will look at how this differed from previous wars. In week 3, we will look at the war from a medical standpoint and its outcomes for medicine in general. Many new medical techniques were tried in field hospitals in the Korean War and we will discuss those implications for modern medicine. In week 4, we will talk about the end of the war and its outcomes and implications for the future. This class will use lectures, discussions, and students will participate in weekly interactive quizzes using the Quizizz platform.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of political ideologies, the Korean War, and its outcomes. Students will improve their communication skills in classroom settings.
