Class Experience

Who doesn't love talking about a book they are reading? While synchronous book clubs are great, lining up schedules and interests can be tricky. This class is built for those that are reading what they want, when they want, and want to share it with others.

This is built to encourage the love for reading with a major focus on practicing communication and public speaking skills.

Each learner will be given 2-3 minutes for a quick review of their book with a quick guide on how to present (introducing the book and author, the overall concept that they are aware of so far, what is happening in the part they are currently reading, and what they think/hope happens next). There will be a timer and the goal of this is to help them focus on getting across the most important points. Since the learners will be reading and discussing different books, part of the goal is to help them understand etiquette around conversations and how to share their thoughts/interests, but also actively listening to others.

Learners will be prompted to ask questions to the speaker if they are unclear about something, or just want to learn more.

Then, the learners will be given a prompt to create an impromptu speech on their book. This will help them formulate their thoughts and present them in a speech format, with only a few minutes to prepare. These will not be shared ahead of time given the nature of impromptu speaking but some examples could be:
-Which character would you want to be friends with and why?
-If you could write the ending to this book right now, how would it end?
-If you could transport these characters to another place, where would you put them?

Books can be all encompassing, and it can be hard when you don't have someone to talk to about the book you are reading. The goal of this class is to provide that opportunity, and use that excitement to help hone public speaking skills.

Hello! I'm Elizabeth Green, founder of Green Communications and My Speech and Debate Coach.

I'm honored to lead a small group of teachers with a passion for helping kids learn how to communicate confidently and effectively in public speaking situations. We are proud to be named Outschool's Best In Class in 2023 and 2024!

We all have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree with a focus on communications (Broadcast Journalism, Theater, Public Relations, etc). We have won numerous awards, competitions and national titles in public speaking and debate.

But most importantly, we know how it feels to be uncomfortable in a public speaking situation, and the importance of overcoming that. We all went through shy stages as children until we had that ONE teacher who impacted us in a way that propelled us to self-confidence, public speaking competitions, and even careers in communications!

Whether it's having the courage to stand up and spell an unknown word in a spelling bee, write and/or deliver compelling lines from a play, craft an effective impromptu speech, or seal the deal in a debate tournament with a persuasive closing round, our goal is to BE that teacher for your child.

And, have a lot of fun in the process. :)
