Class Experience

During this 2-week camp, I will read a non-fiction book about the characteristics of animal teeth. I will then coach students through combining facts about animals teeth (non-fiction) with their imaginations (fiction) as we write about what they would do if they woke with animal teeth! We will also cover; listening, speaking, connecting to a story, sharing thoughts and putting them into a spoken sentence. On Day 1, we will make a list of 5 favorite animals from the story. On Day 2, we will review our list and use it to start our story about what we would do if we had animal teeth. On Day 3, we will reread our list and sentences from Day 2 and then continue our story. Day 4 will be all about adding final details, putting the pages together and reading what we wrote. My job is to coach your learner through putting their idea into a manageable sentence. We will then work through writing the sentence together, sounding out words as we go. High frequency words will be covered as part of the writing process. The camp is limited to 6 students to allow learners to share ideas with each other through conversations and to work through writing a sentence together. Learners should be able to write most letters of the alphabet and have some knowledge of letters and sounds. This camp is appropriate for English Language Learners and is ideal for kindergarten students (current or incoming) and first grade students who find writing difficult.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their ability to write a simple, non-fiction sentence in response to a story and correctly spell age-appropriate high frequency words. Please note: We will use phonetic (developmentally appropriate) spelling for some words. This camp does not focus on correct spelling, but builds confidence in getting ideas on paper.
