Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
An oil company wanted to build an oil pipeline on the treaty land of the Lakota and Dakota nations. Despite the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's action to argue against it, the plans moved forward. In 2016 a small camp started to fight against the pipeline and soon swelled to thousands of people. Hundreds of Native nations joined together in the greatest show of unity between Native nations in US history.

In this class, I will discuss the events leading up to the resistance camps, the start of the resistance, the 7 months of occupation of Oceti Sakowin Camp, and what has happened with the situation since. My children and I are Lipan Apache citizens and we were at the camps at Standing Rock multiple times.

I will teach with a combination of lecture, PowerPoint including personal photographs, and video.
No prior knowledge is needed for this class, but I recommend taking my "Who Are Native Americans" class first.
This is a lecture style class with some time for questions and answers. It can be upsetting to some students, so I give a safe space to process those feelings. It is not a class for sensitive learners.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I will discuss how the United States government fought against the Native resistance camps physically, which includes uses of force. I will talk about this in age appropriate language without too much detail. It can be an emotional subject to learn about. I will use a music video and documentary footage in the class as well. All videos are age appropriate, you can preview them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Onyk7guvHK8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJZ1-LAFOTo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFjnudxcfv0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL4B8XeG4IQ
Supply List
After taking this class, it would be great to watch the documentary Defend the Sacred made by indigenous actor Adam Beach.
https://vimeo.com/190403297
(warning - at 10:57-11:17 there are short clips of state violence against indigenous peoples. Skipping these 20 seconds won't take away from the message of the documentary, so it is up to you.)

Also check out the children's picture book Young Water Protectors by Aslan Tudor about his time at the camp.
