Earthquakes are an amazing feature of our planet. The more we know about Earth, the better we can learn how to live here. I'm a huge fan of earthquakes! I'm looking forward to sharing my expertise and enthusiasm with your students. Class 1 - Earthquake Basics We'll cover some earthquake-related vocabulary including earthquake, epicenter, magnitude, the Richter scale, fault line, plate boundary, wave, and others. These terms will be seamlessly taught with the material. Class 2 - Earth's Interior and Earthquake Related Hazards We'll go into introductory seismology and discuss the different parts of an earthquake wave. Each part of the wave has unique properties that allow us to figure out what's inside the Earth. We'll also discuss additional natural disasters that earthquakes can contribute too. Class 3 - Earthquakes World Wide and Show and Tell Summer camp will conclude by looking at earthquakes around the world. We'll go over earthquake safety and study some real-life examples of earthquake hazards within the home. Additionally, if the student wants to, the student can share where they live (ex. city or state, not address) and we can talk about the tectonic forces and earthquake hazard specific to the student's area.
Learning Goals
Students will increase their knowledge about earthquakes. Rather than fearing them, they will develop a kinship with them and know how to prepare in case of an earthquake.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Classes I Teach:
I teach physical science classes, such as geology, astronomy, Earth and Space Science, physics, chemistry, and science reasoning skills. While I don't teach math classes, I involve numerical reasoning as it is crucial to scientific understanding.
Teaching Philosophy:
A strong emphasis of every class I teach is to ensure that students understand the reasoning behind the concepts. It's not enough to "memorize" facts. What's more important for learning is to understand the why behind facts.
Classes must be fun and engaging. This isn't just to entertain the kids but to provide a sense of belonging, security, and enjoyment so they'll be in the right mindsets to learn. My goal is that each class with be educational and engaging.
Teaching History:
At BYU, I earned my teaching license, my bachelor's in geology, a music minor, and became a nationally certified tutor.
I taught three science classes for three years and then became a substitute teacher due to the arrival of my little girl. <3 Since then, I work as a tutor through Varsity Tutors and teach private piano and violin lessons to kids five and older.
My endorsed core classes include Earth Science, Physics, Chemistry, and 7th and 8th Grade Science.
About Me:
My main interests revolve around science, reading, photography, music, and learning. I'm a life-long learner. I love picking up new hobbies like crocheting, working with polymer clay or a 3D pen, and figuring out better chore systems (;D).
On nights with clear skies, I always look up at the constellations and look for some of my favorite stars. Some might say that knowing the science takes away from the magic, but I say that knowing more about nature gives us a greater appreciation of the world around us. When I look at the constellation of Orion and see Betelgeuse (the top left corner of stars in Orion), I am blown away by the fact that is a red supergiant, yet it looks so small. If Betelgeuse was in the same spot as the sun, the edge of Betelgeuse would be farther than Jupiter's orbital path! Amazing!
