US Grade 5 - 8
In this one-time class, we will explore the role of government and many different types of government systems, especially democracy, socialism, communism, and fascism. We will define each type of government, compare and contrast the different governing styles, and discuss examples of countries that have implemented these systems, both in the present and in the past. I welcome open discussion and encourage students to share any prior knowledge or ask questions throughout the class if they are comfortable. My teaching style is structured but conversational, and I recommend students take notes to help them retain what they've learned. At the end of the class, there will be an informal Q&A session for students to assess their understanding of the material. No prior knowledge or supplies are required for this class, and there is no homework. I will provide a list of recommended reading, watching and listening for students that have further interest in these topics.
Learning Goals
Students will come away with a clear introductory understanding of the role of government in society as well as different government types.
