What Do You See? Writing Horror Fiction Through Pictures
In this 2-week class, learners will view different types of creepy photos. Instead of a traditional written writing prompt, students will view a photo and decide what they see and what "story" pops into their minds.

In this class, you will really dive into your love of writing horror and anything scary. There are so many facets of the horror genre, so you will get to be as creative as you want to be. Why? Because in this class, you will be shown a series of pictures. Each picture will have YOU, the writer, making your own interpretation and deciding what YOU want to write about. You get to take creative license with each piece and steer the reader in the direction you want their mind to go. Each picture...
Students will learn how to stay focused on their task and write about specific literary elements that are being asked of them. We will review the given literary element together to check for understanding. Together we will brainstorm ideas regarding the photo that is being presented, and then the students will begin to construct a short writing piece.
I am a New York State certified English teacher, grades 7-12. I have a B.A. in English and creative writing, and I hold a master's degree in secondary education. I have been a teacher for many years, and reading and writing is definitely my passion. I have been published several times for my horror fiction, and I have read my fiction writing in numerous public forums.
There is no formal homework for this class. Each learner is encouraged to pick their favorite writing piece from the first class and continue to embellish it. Each piece from the first class will be improved upon and added to during the second class with another series of pictures. However, there is always one piece that stands out to any writer as being their best, so I hope my writers will consider finishing a short piece outside of the class and sharing it with me.
Students will need a pen and a notebook for writing. If it is easier, students may use a laptop to type their stories on.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This class may contain some scary content via photographs and discussion. Written material is composed at the discretion of the writer.
