Class experience
In this ongoing class, students will learn to develop their reciprocal conversational skills through a variety of different topics. Each week will have a different topic or topics to discuss. If students have specialized interests, we will make sure that these are covered at least one time. While students will present some information about their topics, much of the class will focus on how to give information while also accepting information about the same topic, answering questions and how...
Students will develop a toolbox of conversational and social pragmatic strategies to use when in social or peer situations. Depending on the individual needs of learners, we will develop: 1. Taking turns when talking with others. 2. Staying on topic. 3. Asking follow-up questions. 4. Giving pauses and allowing others to add to a topic. 5. Respectfully disagreeing. 6. Using transitional phrases. 7. Rephrasing 8. How to ask different types of questions
I received her bachelors of science in special education, English and secondary education magna cum laude from Simmons College in Boston. Throughout her almost twenty years as a teacher, she has worked with many students on social pragmatic skills one-on-one, in small groups and even through whole group instruction. She has been trained in Think:Kids Collaborative Problem Solving from Massachusetts General Hospital in how to lead child-centered reciprocal conversations to bring about productive change. Personally, I have a daughter with Autism who is continuing to work on her social pragmatic skills. We work as a family to help ourselves continue to develop our positive communication skills! There is always room to grow!
Families will be asked to fill out an informational survey with their child to help me to better tailor the class to each student's needs.
This class welcomes all students who may want to learn social pragmatic skills and may include neurodiverse learners who may identify as Autistic or with Non-Verbal Learning Disability or Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder.
