What Did They Do Back Then? 8 Week Class Volume 2

This class will take students on a journey to the past to see how the world has changed. Each week students will compare different activities that were done in past to how they are done in modern day. Each week we will move further along in history towards the present day. Students will experience how life was like and how it has changed through games, crafts, and other activities. We will cover a wide variety of time periods and subjects from starting in the 20th century and moving backwards to Ancient times. Class will begin with a brief introduction of activities and history behind them. Below is a description of each week's class and the topics covered a long with any required supplies. There may be additional optional supplies both lists will be posted in the classroom before that week's class.

Week 1:
Topic: Soda Fountains, poodle skirt and Sock Hops
Era: 1950s
Comparing: Treats and Fun
Activities: Making Ice Cream soda, poodle skirt design and dancing
Supplies: Ice Cream and Soda (or any carbonated drink), glass and spoon, paper, colored pencils/markers 

Week 2:
Topic: Putting on a show during the 1940s
Era: World War 2
Comparing: Theater and performing
Activity: Creating a show
Supplies: To help make this particular class experience feel more authentic the supply list will be posted approximately 24 hours before the class meets. Learners should use whatever they have around the house and not purchase anything.

Week 3:
Topic: Brownie cameras
Era: 1900s to 1940s
Comparing: Photography
Activity: Taking and sharing pictures
Supplies: A few pictures your learner has taken, a camera or other device with a camera, and something to take pictures of. 

Week 4:
Topic: Victorian hats
Era: 1860s to early 1900s
Comparing: Fashion
Activity: Decorating hats
Supplies: A hat (preferably with a brim), ribbon, yarn, paper, etc to decorate hat with.

Week 5:
Topic: Spying during the American Civil War
Era: 1860s
Comparing: Secretly gathering information
Activity: Creating a disguise and hiding information
Supplies: Clothes to create a disguise with, and a small piece of paper

Week 6:
Topic: General stores
Era: late 1700s to 1880s
Comparing: Shopping
Activity: Exchanging goods for credit and "buying" things
Supplies: 5 or more random items

Week 7:
Topic: Portraits
Era: 1700s
Comparing: Self-expression
Activity: Drawing a self-portrait
Supplies:  Paper, colored pencils, markers, etc.

Week 8:
Topic: Ice Cream
Era: Ancient times to today
Comparing: Different kinds of ice cream
Activity: Making ice cream
Supplies: 1 large zipper-top plastic bag, 1 small zipper-top plastic bag, (Regular zipper top plastic bags are fine, but freezer bags are better), enough ice cubes to fill the large bag 1/4 to 1/2 full. salt, milk, vanilla, sugar, a towel. 
Some learners may need an adult to help, instructions will be sent to adult prior to class to help them decide if their help is needed.
