Class Experience

Understanding audience and purpose are essential for communicating with the world around you. Communiticating effectively requires knowing how to adapt for your audience while still achiveing your purpose. The best way to understand how to do that for yourself is to look at how others do it.

In this one time workshop, we'll first discuss what audience and purpose are and why they are important. Then, we'll look at various texts to understand how main characters/writers have structured their arguments based on who they are talking to and what they hope to accomplish. This involves pinpointing the person who is speaking, who they are speaking to, what they are saying, and why they are saying it. We'll then discuss how this same strategy can be used when writing for classes or careers.

I'll model the kinds of questions you can ask when analyzing any number of texts. I encourage students to brainstorm their own examples of audience and purpose from other shows that they watch as well. I'll also provide an extension activity where students can compose a character sketch and analysis paragraph.
