Dive into the world of sea turtles, fishes, corals, sharks, and many others in an exploration that will take students into the world full of amazing creatures. Explore areas such as the Great Barrier Reef and learn about the multitude of species of aquatic life that exist. In this class, students will get an introduction into marine biology from many parts of the world.

In week 1, students will explore the biology that exists in coral reefs and get an introduction into many of the amazing organisms that live there such as clownfish, seahorses, and sea turtles.

In week 2, students will take a trip to the Arctic and explore the amazing marine organisms that live in this extreme environment such as orca whales, polar bears, and walruses.

In week 3, we will learn about the amazing wildlife that exists in estuaries and mangrove forests and take a trip to the Florida Everglades where students will learn about exciting marine organisms such as alligators, manatees, and crocodiles.

And in the last week, students will get an introduction into biology in the deep ocean and learn about organisms such as the giant squid, the tripod fish, and the deep sea anglerfish and learn about why they are able to exist in such an extreme environment.

Students will use Nearpod, an interactive program that allows students to answer short multiple choice questions, participate in discussion boards with other students, and watch videos pertaining to class material. There are no pre-requisites for this class, just an interest in learning about the amazing world of marine biology.
In this 4-week course, students will have one recording per week and receive worksheets corresponding to those recordings. The recordings will be posted by the date the class is scheduled, so for example, if your class is on a Saturday the recordings will be posted by the end of the day on Saturday therefore the students can choose when they would like to view them. The length of the class can be extended if needed to allow students to have time to view recordings and access materials.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. In the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental clean up projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their life to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and post graduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
