10 in-class hoursClass Experience
During this class, we will read and enjoy the third Harry Potter book! I will be using a copy of the illustrated version to complete the read a-louds, which is full of engaging pictures and adds another element to class! This class is for students who have not read the text before AND for those who wish to read the text again at a deeper level. Class will begin each day with a discussion of the chapter students read at home. Chapters can be read any way you wish at home, but I will provide a link to a recorded video of the chapters as an option. During the discussion time, students will share their feelings about the text, using discussion practices taught during the first class session and perfected through out the course. Students will receive feedback on their discussion practices. During this time, we will be learning how to have a discussion, including how do I express my opinion, agree or disagree respectfully with the opinions of others, add on to others ideas, and generate our own questions from the text. Following the opening discussion, there will be a teacher guided read a-loud for the rest of class. This is when a teacher reads a text, pausing in a strategic places to discuss the text or to look at new words. I will be asking a variety of questions designed to target character, plot, and vocabulary. Students will make inferences and use critical thinking to understand what is happening with the characters. As the class goes on, I will eventually ask students to read some parts of the text independently and help me identify when there are interesting moments or vocabulary to explore. This is what adult readers do and the goal here is to create scholars with awesome discussion skills and adult-level independent reading practices! Below is an overview of the chapters to be read in-class and at home over the ten days of this course. This schedule is designed to change based on student need, interest, and what we accomplish in class. Day 1: Chapter 1 (Chapters 2 at home) Day 2: Chapter 3 (Chapter 4 at home) Day 3: Chapter 5 (Chapter 6 at home) Day 4: Chapter 7 (Chapter 8-10 at home- Over multiple days) Day 5: Chapter 11 (Chapter 12 at home) Day 6: Chapter 13 (Chapter 14 at home) Day 7: Chapter 14 (Chapter 15 at home) Day 8: Chapter 16 (Chapter 17-18 at home- Over multiple days) Day 9: Chapter 19 (Chapter 20 at home) Day 10: Chapter 21 & 22 *This is a great class for students who are off from school right now! They can get ALL the literacy skills they need to go back to school stronger than they left! * I plan on continuing this class as a series, where we work our way through ALL the Harry Potter books while developing the literacy skills needed for life!! I have classes for the first two books posted!
Learning Goals
Students will improve their literacy skills, speaking and listening skills, and vocabulary acquisition skills while reading the highly engaging Harry Potter!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am the absolute best teacher for this class because I am a HARRY POTTER NUT! I have read the Harry Potter series 9 times! I have read it as an adult for pleasure two times and as a read a-loud for students in my class six times. I think that this is the PERFECT book to foster a love of reading in children. The text is so exciting, no matter your age. In addition, I am a MAT student at Johns Hopkins School of Education where I am focused on reading instruction! I know what kids need to become stronger readers! I can give your students what they need and they will enjoy themselves!!
