Most students wait to start thinking about college until their junior year - when it can be too late to go back and sign up for classes you didn't know you should have taken, to begin demonstrating long-term commitments to your passions, or to start preparing for some of the essential practice tests. In this class, we'll get a jump on your college applications by setting you up early for success! We'll discuss what college admissions counselors look for in applications, including extracurricular activities, what classes to sign up for, and what to do if and when your GPA isn't meeting expectations. We'll also discuss timelines and deadlines to create a solid plan for your high school career that will enable you to sign up for the activities and classes you enjoy without sabotaging your chances of attending the university that will allow you to pursue your dreams. Students will be able to ask specific questions about their intended career, activities they hope to pursue, or other opportunities of interest. Parents are welcome to sit in at no additional charge.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a Professional Member of the Independent Educational Consultant Association (IECA), a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), and the founder of Honors Educational Services, a tutoring and test prep company. I have been tutoring all ages and all subjects for over 20 years. I love helping students with college guidance and application essays and have written several books on SAT and standardized test preparation--but I also teach almost everything else! My favorite subjects to teach are math, history, nutrition, Shakespeare, and creative writing...but since I homeschool my two children, I'm always falling in love with something new.
I love to learn, and I love to inspire a love of learning in my students. I want my students to feel listened to, to be engaged, and to come out of every class with a passion for something new.
I have a B.S. in Speech and Theatre from Northwestern University, and have taken graduate-level classes in Screenwriting and Production at UCLA. I was Editor-in-Chief of Los Angeles-based Family Magazine Group, and am also a former personal trainer and certified yoga instructor. With college application assistance, my students have gotten into great universities all over the world, including Columbia, CalTech, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Notre Dame, Northwestern, USC, Trinity College Dublin, SMU, Syracuse, and scores more.
Fun facts about me:
I have won awards for screenwriting, editing, poetry and personal essays, and I currently write Middle Grade and YA novels.
I love to travel! I've backpacked around Europe several times and love to learn new languages - If you speak something other than English, teach me some words! I'm in the process of refreshing my Spanish, re-learning my French, and teaching myself Irish Gaeilge.
I have a very large, very friendly Irish Wolfhound, who sometimes likes to say hello.
