Weird, Wacky and Yucky History

Why could bread be dangerous? Who designed the first space craft? How did Victorians brush their teeth? If your child has lots of questions about the past that standard history books don't answer, this is the course for them. In this class, students will learn weird, wacky and yucky facts about different time periods in history. Each week will focus on a different theme. Week 1Lesson 1Food and EatingLearners will explore different foods that were common throughout time, foods that were considered dangerous and some elaborate food structures.Week 2Lesson 2DentistryLearners will explore different dental treatments from the past, including Roman mouthwash, Victorian toothpaste and learn about how people removed teeth before anaesthetic. They will learn about false teeth and explore what teeth were made out of in the past.Week 3Lesson 3MedicineWe will learn about what people believed in before they knew about germs. Learners will explore different medical treatments from the past and explore some unusual medicines. Learners will take part in a matching pairs game to match treatments to diseases.Week 4Lesson 4Space TravelLearners will explore ideas for early space travel, dating from the seventeenth to nineteenth century. We will learn about 'firsts' in space and about 'Personal Preference Kits'. We will also explore how people peed and pooped in space.
I am a qualified teacher in the UK and have a PhD in history. I have taught history to learners from aged 3 up to the postgraduate level.
Some of the tasks may require common craft materials (e.g. pens, paper).

This class will talk about some 'yucky' facts. This includes talking about poop and pee (particularly in weeks 2, 3 and 4). We will also mention death in weeks 2 and 3 (this will be in passing and not a focus of any discussion). Please ensure that you and your learner are comfortable talking about these subjects before you enrol.
