Class Experience

Animals do some weird things! In this one-time, 35-minute class, we will discuss five animals: penguins, snails, rhinos, bats, and koalas. Why do bats always turn left when they exit caves? A rhino's horn is made of what?! Not only will we discuss crazy facts, but we will also become mini zoologists and learn about these animals' behavior and physiology. This class will be learner-driven. Question and answer guides this class from beginning to end--we will learn from each other as we discuss five fun animals! The class will end with a fun review game of Kahoot! to test our knowledge of these five interesting animals!

NOTE: Please either have an additional device (cell phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) to play Kahoot! on while we are in the Zoom conference, OR print off a physical copy of the Kahoot! buttons so they can point to the answers.

Please keep in mind I am an experienced teacher and lifelong learner, but I am not a professional zoologist.

Learning Goals

Students will learn not only about interesting animal facts, but they will learn some zoology as well. We will focus on five animals and answering five questions:
1. How long and why do snails hibernate?
2. What do koalas and humans have in common? (So much in common that a koala was mistaken as a suspect for a crime!)
3. What is a rhino's horn made of?
4. Why do bats always turn left when leaving a cave?
5. What is 3% of all the ice in the Antarctic made of?

After we answer these questions and discuss some other interesting facts about five animals, we will play a fun game of Kahoot! to test our knowledge in a fun way.
