US Grade 4 - 6
Are you looking for writing practice for your 9-12 year old? Do you need your learner to complete a weekly writing assignment with an option for a grade? Would your student benefit from writing instruction and accountability whether or not they have prior experience with IEW? You have arrived at the right place! Every month, we will write 4 different 1 paragraph reports in class, and students will have another assignment to complete at home. We will write a variety of types of writing that will include short reports, fables, stories based on pictures, and descriptive, reflective, expository, and persuasive essays. First Meeting of the Week: I will instruct students how to complete the key word outline. We will complete an outline in class, and students will receive an assignment to complete outside of class. Students will have the opportunity to brainstorm and share ideas together. There will be lots of opportunity for sharing and discussion. Second Meeting of the Week: I will present a new stylistic technique for students to practice when they write their paragraphs. These include adjectives, verbs, adverbs, clauses, and a variety of different ways to start sentences. Using the outline from earlier in the week, we will work together to complete the 1-3 paragraph report or story. Students will use the outline they completed outside of class to write their own report or story using the style technique presented for the week. The writing structure and style I teach come from the Institute for Excellence in Writing. I am a registered instruction with IEW. No prior experience with IEW is needed or required. This is an ongoing class, so the types of writing will be repeated every month. However, we will always have a different topic. (The units are included for your reference. They do not need to be completed in order, so you are fine to jump in at any point.) Week 1 (June 2): Note Taking and Report Writing (IEW Units 1, 2, and 4) Week 2 (June 9): Fables (IEW Units 1 and 2) Week 3 (June 16): Write a Story from a Picture (IEW Unit 5) Week 4 (June 23): Creative Writing-Expository, Descriptive, Persuasive, Reflective (IEW Unit 7)
