US Grade 2 - 3
In this ongoing class, students will become masters at paragraph writing. We will review what is needed to write a quality paragraph, specifically an introduction, supporting details, and a conclusion. We will spend time discussing why each aspect of the paragraph is incredibly important. In addition to those basic tenets of a paragraph, we will spend time discussing other ways to improve writing skills. For example, we will discuss the importance of using adjectives to make our writing specific. We will discuss how to use transition words to make our reading easier for our readers to understand. We will discuss what a student should do if he or she feels stuck when writing. In the first 10-15 minutes of the class, we will have our lesson for the day. Our lessons will focus on different aspects of paragraph writing, such as brainstorming, introduction sentences, transition words, descriptive writing, staying on topic, conclusion sentences, and editing. We will then spend 5-10 minutes working together on a group paragraph. I will do all the writing, but we will work through the steps of paragraph writing together as a class. For the last 10 minutes of class, students will have an opportunity to practice what we have talked about in that class through writing their own paragraph. I will check in with students while they are writing to help guide them and to reinforce the concepts from the day's lesson. At the end of each class, students who wish to do so may share their paragraphs with the group.
Learning Goals
Students will become masters at writing paragraphs and develop a solid ability to include in their writing an introduction, supporting details, and a conclusion. Students will also learn how to enhance their writing through other techniques, such as a greater use of adjectives and transition words. Students will become more confident in their abilities.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, students will learn that writing can be fun and that anyone can become a good writer.
