Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Children not only need time to write, they also need explicit instruction to develop into confident writers. In this class students will learn and practice:

Narrative Writing

-Craft true stories with a beginning, middle, and end.
-Stay on topic and use pictures to match their writing.
-Describe reaction to the events in the story (emotions / feelings words).
-Use ending punctuation, capitalize the first letter in a sentence, spell sight words correctly, and use letter sound knowledge to spell new words.

Opinion Writing

-Plan how to write opinion by following a structure (graphic organizer).
-Provide two or more reasons for opinion.
-Use ending punctuation, capitalize the first letter in a sentence, spell sight words correctly, and use letter sound knowledge to spell new words.

Each class begins with a demonstration of what is expected, and students are provided with sentence starters and word banks.
After the demonstration, students have time to write independently while the teacher checks in with each student to brainstorm ideas and give feedback.
