Do you want your child to practice public speaking? To feel confident in social settings? To be able to speak up and/or participate with other kids? Do you want your child to practice stating their point of view in a warm and encouraging environment? If yes, this is the class for you. Your student will grow self and social confidence in this 40 minute weekly class. Ms. Leslie starts every class with a very simple, happy group act of kindness, everyone saying hello to everyone, using first names. "Hello Sophie." "Hello Lucas!". Saying hello and getting a hello back. We talk about someone's name being important to them. Using it is a show of kindness and respect. Simplicity. Good feelings. Next, students are presented with choices. They are asked to make decisions, to write and draw answers, to share and show answer sheets to the class and to explain reasoning. After three decisions, students use their answers to write a story, then share it with the class. Friendship skills are encouraged throughout the class. Students participate in acts of kindness, like clapping, thumbs up, hearts, compliments and good jobs when they hear something they like. My job is to create a fun environment to practice basic skills while building confidence, personally and socially. Would you Rather class example: Ms. Leslie says: YOU are planning a party! Would you rather.. have guests wear a tall hat, a wide hat or a wild hat? (Write and draw answer, then present to class. Discuss reason.) Would you rather have dancing, arts and crafts or video games for your guests to play? (Write and draw answer, then present to class. Discuss reason.) Your guests are hungry for a sweet treat! Will you serve milkshakes and French fries, a sundae bar, s'mores or have a chocolate fountain? (Write and draw answer, then present to class. Discuss reason.) After three rounds, students write a story, using their three answers. Time allowing, they illustrate their stories, then present to the class. It's so much fun. Learning while laughing. This is a feel good class. The process is the same every week, but the clues and students change. Every day is a new experience. The more times a student takes the class, the more confident they become Students practice each of these skills in every class: 1. Public Speaking 2. Writing 3. Drawing 4. Reading 5.
