In this ongoing watercolor painting class we will meet weekly to create a different landscape. Landscape paintings are a lovely and easy way to get introduced to watercolor painting techniques. We explore a variety of techniques that pertain to the medium, as well as learn elements and principles of art in general. Art making in my classes are always process focused, but we will discuss what challenges come up when creating art, and work out solutions. The students will be able to get the instructor's and their classmates feedback. Sometimes the art will take up more than a single lesson. The learners may need to finish their painting independently from time to time. During class, I will be painting and the students will paint alongside me. Throughout the class, the students are more than welcome to make suggestions as to what they would like to paint. Using prompts and with students following along with me, we will have a great time painting together! Some weeks we will sketch prior to painting, while other weeks we will jump right into painting. Parental Guidance
Dear parents,
Please go over the supply list. The most important thing is proper brushes! Without a correct set of brushes, the learner might find the experience of painting with acrylics less enjoyable. It is VERY IMPORTANT that they have a large flat brush for the background, a few medium to small brushes, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY A TINY ROUND BRUSH FOR ALL THE DETAILS. The tiny brush can be size 0, 1 or 2.
The other really important thing is paper. Watercolor paper is specifically designed to be able to withstand water. Painting on a regular sketch paper will be a frustrating experience, so please make sure you have proper watercolor paper. I recommend taping the edges with masking tape before we begin painting.
Having a hair dryer on hand is another item that we will be using frequently.
It is important to be on time for the class. It can be difficult to catch up if you are even a few minutes late.
For this class, the right supplies will make all the difference!
Supply List
Supplies needed for the class: #1. Paint: Watercolor paint palette. I prefer MozArt Komorebi set, which is what I use for the class, or Sakura Koi travel set. #2. Paintbrushes: You will need a few different brushes. For most paintings you will need a large flat brush for the background, a small flat brush for the flowers, branches and what not, and a small round brush for the details and small branches. Here is my general list of brushes: A large flat brush for large areas, such as backgrounds. A few smaller flat brushes (we use those for the majority of the painting). A medium and a small round tip brush for the final details. For most of my paintings I find that these brushes are enough: # 12 Flat, # 8 Flat, # 12 Round, # 8 Round, # 2 Round. I will be using a semi soft synthetic set of brushes for this class from a local craft store. #3. Watercolor paper: Strathmore or Canson is what I use, 140 lbs. #4. Hair drier to help us dry layers in between working. #5. Masking tape #6. Sketching pencil and eraser. #7. A tube of white acrylic paint. #8. Cup with water to wash brushes in, an old towel, or paper towels to wipe the brush with. Don't forget to wear appropriate clothing for painting!
