Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
Printmaking is an artform for discovery. The materials are readily available and generally inexpensive. Printmaking encourages the learner to invent and experiment; also presents the challenge for simple, direct expression. In this course, we will focus weekly on various printmaking techniques: using a brayer to create prints, exploring different tools and printmaking papers as well as working with a variety of printing surfaces.

No experience is required- these projects are designed to introduce children to the artform of printmaking, encouraging creativity, imagination and exploration with every learner. Learners might need to spend additional time outside from class meetings to work on their printing plates during the last few sessions of this course.

We will be using non-toxic water-based printing inks, paints, brayers and a lot of paper. We will explore using common craft materials: cardboard & tape as well as printingmaking blocks: gel and linoleum. We will learn about what a ghost print is and how to make one as well as learning how to make a linoleum print. A detailed material list with resources will be provided upon registration, as well as listed weekly in the classroom and syllabus. Join us, make new friends and have fun discovering and working with this artform!

My name is Sylvette Frazier, I am an Educator, an Artist, and Nature Pedagogist, specializing in Early Childhood Education. I have been in the field of education for several decades working in a variety of capacities and roles (Atelierista, Teaching Artist, Preschool Teacher, Program Manager) with children between the ages of 3-11. During the last several years, I have been designing art & nature-based programs through my business: Connecting Children to Art in Nature, to ignite curiosity about nature and facilitate experiences for children and their families to express themselves in a variety of artistic formats. I have experienced much success in my career in past years; such as awarded with an Artist in Residence Grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. I have a Master of the Arts Degree in Early Childhood/Primary Education, a Bachelor Degree in Child Development, Program Director Permit for Preschools from the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing, IB PYP Certification in Teaching and Learning. I am also a National Geographic Certified Educator.

As a working Teaching Artist for the last ten years, my work with young children lends well to the Reggio-Emilia pedagogy of dedicating time to pursue creative work in an Atelier (a creative studio). I enjoy working with children to foster their artistic development of the elements of art & design, and the exploration of materials to use as artistic expression.
