This is a fun ongoing spelling class with some serious learning! This class will focus on prefixes, suffixes, and Latin/Greek roots with the goal being to add these building blocks and these words into the student's working vocabulary for aid in reading comprehension and also writing. We will also define each word, talk about the part of speech, and practice pronouncing and using each word in a sentence. New students can join any week and long attending students get to know one another...
Students will master the spelling/definition of common middle school vocabulary words, reinforce spelling rules, and learn meanings for common prefixes, suffixes, and Latin/Greek roots..
I have taught in my homeschool for 16+ years and taught ESL for 5+ years online -- spelling is just a challenge! English is hard sometimes! It is such a mish-mash of other languages that it creates some crazy ways to spell words. Learning roots and common prefixes and suffixes helps build vocabulary which can then be applied to writing and reading comprehension. Practice and reinforcement are the best tools for learning these words...games and friends make the learning fun! In addition to teaching my own kids, I have a journalism degree from PSU and am IMSE Orton-Gillingham trained in phonics and reading instruction.
Practice! Practice! Practice! Optional activities sent out after class each week.
A ready-to-learn attitude, some paper, and a pencil or pen! (or a dry erase board) The week's list will be posted after class.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Check the sample list above for ability level. If your child cannot spell any of the words correctly and is unsure of what they mean, this class may be above your child's level -- try this c lass instead: https://outschool.com/classes/weekly-ongoing-spelling-practice-grades-5-6-fy6dHjBR?sectionUid=43b9ac7c-392d-4a02-a447-fd9d56ced663&usid=0ojf0d5G&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link If all the words are a challenge for your child to spell but they know the meanings of some of the words (ie: your child can use some of them correctly in a sentence), this class should be a good fit for your child. If your child can spell some of these words but others are a challenge, this class is right for your child. If your child can spell all the words without a pause and knows what they all mean -- this class may be below the ability of your child.
