50 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
May require investigation graph to be completed independently, depending on the time required for the investigation.Assessment
Informal assessment through games and class activitiesGrading
Certificate of Completion provided at the end of the course.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner - Advanced Level
In this ongoing class, learners will learn the process of experimental design by conducting hands on investigations on a variety of topics each week. They will be presented with a question at the beginning of the session, make a hypothesis, then identify control, independent, and dependent variables. Following along with the teacher, they will then conduct the experiment themselves, using common household materials, analyze, and communicate results, and make a scientific conclusion about the science. Students will be asked to keep a journal or notebook, and all materials and handouts will be posted the Sunday before each class. Week 1: The "O" Wing : Does the size of the wing on an O Wing plane affect the distance it flies? Week 2 The M & M Lab : Does the temperature of the water affect the time it takes for the candy to dissolve? Week 3: Move It! Does the mass of an object affect the amount of force needed to move it? Week 4 Swinging: the length of a pendulum affect the number of times it swings in one minute? Week 5: Blast Off! Does the length of a catapult affect how far an object will move when launched? Week 6 Balloon Races: Does the amount of air in a balloon affect the distance it flies? Week 7 Marble Run: Does the number of marbles hit affect the number that rolls away? Week 8: Weight Lifter: Does the length of the support beam affect the amount of effort needed to lift a load? After week 8, the class cycle will begin again with week 1.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to conduct valid experiments with controlled variables and accurate measurement. They will learn how to analyze their results and make scientific conclusions.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will interact in class through the Pear Deck platform as the main presentation tool. Check for Understanding games will be played on Kahoot and Quizlet. Some pre-screened You Tube videos will be included for content as well as unlisted YouTube videos created by the teacher. None of these resources require students to create log ins or accounts and they will be presented live through the PearDeck platform.
