Homework
I offer ways for your students to practice the skills they are working on, but homework is optional. Some parents like for me to assign work outside of our sessions. I am always happy to set up reading schedules, and assign reading and writing homework, but I leave this up to the parents and students.Assessment
While I do not give grades, I will often provide feedback regarding where I'm seeing improvement and what I think students should continue to practice.Grading
includedClass Experience
1:1 tutoring is a wonderful option for students who need extra help, are looking to be challenged, need direction, and/or help managing their time. Each session is designed with the student in mind. Working together with parents and the student, I make sure each lesson is geared towards the student's needs and goals. What Does a Tutoring Session Look Like? Together students and I can work on- - reading and reading comprehension - writing (essays, creative writing, analysis, research) - the writing process - spelling, grammar and punctuation - ELA homework - test prep - reading for enjoyment - writing without fear - building skills - building confidence - study skills & time management - organization - growth mindset Learn Styles and Individuality Along with the topics and skills I teach, each class is structured according to how the student learns best. We all learn differently and need different approaches. In our session I may- - read out loud to them - read with them (taking turns) - have them read out loud - assign reading and writing outside of class and use our class time for review and discussion - write with students - scribe for students - have students write outside of class and use class time for review and editing - assign and assess projects Our sessions can also be designed to focus on both reading and writing. They can also shift and change over time. Whatever your child needs at the moment is what we'll focus on. Interest and Motivation To help students stay motivated and interested, I often use games and interactive slides during the lesson. For younger students, I also use songs, props, and movement. Materials I use a variety of genres to help students learn including: novels, short stories, poems, essays, articles, and test prep guides. I also use Google Docs, Actively Learn, Quizizz, Nearpod, and educational websites. There is no extra change for these sites, but students will often have to create a free account. Teaching Style My main goal is always to help your child learn and feel confident in the skills they are learning and/or having a hard time mastering. I will check in with students each class to make sure we are staying on track with what they need. I also check in with parents often to let them know what I am seeing, we're working on, and find out if there are other things teachers/parents are noticing. It's important we are all on the same page. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to contact me or talk to me during their child's session. Students and I will be interacting for the entire session. They are always welcome to message me on Outschool in-between our sessions. I tutor many students each week. It is one of my favorite parts of my day. I hope I can work with your student soon!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in English from Radford University
I love helping kids build their reading and writing skills and confidence. I started teaching English in 2004. I taught English Language Arts for nine years to middle school and high school students. For the last nine + years, I have homeschooled my children and taught English to hundreds of students online. I have experience working with students who have dyslexia and other learning differences, are gifted, have ADD or ADHD, Autism, and speak English as a second language. I have also taught many students who do not like school or are reluctant to read or write. I find my love of learning, patience, and creativity helps students who were frustrated and struggling to find success.
