In this on-going class, we will learn descriptive and creative writing skills and techniques, then a writing prompt to put those skills to practice. Some of skills and techniques learned include: alliteration, using our 5 senses, synonyms for different words, adjectives, metaphors and similes, different variations of "said", etc. Some writing prompts will be questions, others may be a scenario, and others might be based off a picture or photo. Wee of 5/1 Synonyms of "said" Week of 5/8 Synonyms of "good" and "bad" Week of 5/15 Using adjectives Week of 5/22 Using Adverbs Week of 5/29 Metaphors and Similes Week of 6/5 Onomatopoeia and alliteration Week of 6/12 Haiku poems Week of 6/19 Personification and hyperbole Week of 6/26 5 senses (show, don't tell) Week of 7/3 *NO CLASS* Week of 7/10 Stretching sentences (5 W's) Week of 7/17 Sequence of Events Week of 7/23 Nature Writing Week of 7/31 Free Write/poetry I suggest having a notebook to bring to class. Students may also type if they prefer. Optional: students can keep notes on the different skills and techniques we go over. Each class will be structured as following: 1) Students will learn a new skill or technique. This will be a collaborative process. 2) Students will write based on the prompt - students will make sure to include the learned skill or technique in their draft. If students have questions, they can either use the "raise hand" function or use the chat box. I will play instrumental music to help inspire creativity. I will also be writing based on the prompt. 3) We will share the prompts. Students are not required to share, but it can be fun. If they would prefer, students can also send me what they have written privately through the Outschool messaging in the classroom. As this is an on-going class, feel free to join and leave at your family's convenience. If there is a specific creative/descriptive skill or technique you'd like your student to practice, feel free to message me and I can focus on it one specific week.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their descriptive and creative writing skills by practicing answering different writing prompts.
