Weekly Descriptive Essay Writing Workshop: Build Stronger Essays, Step by Step

The more students write, and use structure to construct the essay, the easier it becomes as they increase their skill and writing fluency. Class size is kept small in order for students to receive help when they need.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
In this ongoing weekly writing workshop, learners ages 9-14 will master the art of descriptive essay writing — building confidence, structure, and style one paragraph at a time.

Students start with an orientation, learning how to brainstorm ideas and organize them using a graphic organizer on Google Docs. From there, they’ll craft a detailed descriptive essay, working through four main ideas and supporting details. They’ll develop clear paragraphs, smooth transitions, and a strong introduction and conclusion — with the teacher providing guidance and feedback along the way.

Most students will complete their first essay in about two weeks, though pacing remains flexible to accommodate different writing speeds. Once they’ve mastered the process, students may continue refining their descriptive essays or, upon request, explore other essay types — such as narrative, persuasive, expository, reflective, or compare/contrast — with teacher support.

This workshop is designed to meet learners where they are, helping them grow as writers through personalized instruction and real-time feedback.

Weekly Breakdown:

Week 1: Orientation, graphic organizer setup, begin first descriptive essay.

Week 2: Develop paragraphs, add transitions, craft an introduction/conclusion, and revise with feedback.

Ongoing Weeks: Continue refining essays or start new ones. Students may branch into other essay types upon request.

The teacher monitors and supports each learner in real time, offering constructive feedback during and after writing.

Other Details

Learning Needs
The class uses google docs as they construct the essays, this is very helpful for those with learning differences. Every student works at their own pace. I can work with the family on how to help specific needs.
Pre-Requisites
Students need to be able to type on a google doc. I DO NOT allow handwriting. The essays are 6 paragraphs long, so they need to have ideas for that would allow for 3-4 main ideas and 4 details for each main idea.
Supply List
Students need to be able to access a google doc, have access to materials to research their topic if needed. Please verify that your learner can access and type on a google doc before class. I post a link in the class before they start class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
